"

Do you want to make money as a student with little spare time? Do you want to be financially independent? Wondering if that's even possible in Tunisia? Well, it is, in one word: Freelance.

What is Freelancing?

Freelancing is simply being self-employed, free of pressure while doing what you enjoy most. Freelancers are usually referred to as independent contractors getting paid hourly or per project; working is a field that may or may not be their studies. In other words, freelancing is open to everyone, but not anyone: if you can do something well enough to sell it, then freelancing is indeed for you. I have seen many Tunisians complain about freelancing being impossible for them because they can't get paid or because they think clients won't trust North Africans. Still, I can assure you, from my own experience, and many others, not only is it possible, but also more accessible than you might imagine!

Why Be a Freelancer?

There are countless advantages of freelance, but I will not make it longer for you because I value your time. So here are the best things in freelancing:

Flexible work schedule: forget about waking up early to work; you can make your schedule, adapting it to your current situation. So if you are a student, this is a big one for you.

No pressure: One of the best things about freelance is that you don't have to work every day, so whenever you feel tired, overwhelmed, you can take some time off.

Freedom of clients: According to a new DDI Research 57% of employees quit because of their boss. With freelancing, you have the freedom to choose whom you want to work for.

Experience: this one is for students. Having a list of clients directly or indirectly related to your study field will boost your chances to get internships, future jobs, and future repeat freelance clients.

How Do I Start Freelancing?

1. Identify Your Industry

As mentioned above, freelancers are not necessarily college graduates. Why? Clients look for people who can do a specific task professionally. Take my word for it, and your college degree is the last they will be looking at (that if they even look at it). Ask yourself: What do I love doing the most?

Wondering what industry you should choose? Here are the 15 Best Freelance Jobs for Beginners, that require limited or no experience.

2. Become Skilled at What You Do

Once you have decided upon one industry, only ONE, you should be working on your skills doing what you do. You may take online courses, read books & articles about that industry, and try doing some work independently.

3. Prepare a Portfolio

A client will be looking at your portfolio so that you get chosen for an interview. That is why you should make sure your portfolio reflects your skills. I will be explaining to you in further detail how to prepare a killer portfolio, but for now, focus on preparing good work samples, even if it's for free (for family members, friends, ...)

4. Choose a Platform, and Dive in!

Choose whether you want to work on your own or a freelancing platform, and then start your new financial independence journey!

Would you consider freelancing?
